A Local Textile Art Project Celebrating Heritage and Community

Would you like to be part of a local community project creating a new piece of textile art that represents the heritage, landscape and community within Old Shoreham and the surrounding area?

The Community Banner is currently being created with people from across the community, reflecting and celebrating the places within Old Shoreham as well as the people, wildlife, landscapes and heritage. This project is led by local facilitator and artist Wendy Jones.

Techniques and materials

We are primarily using a range of fabric and stitching techniques with hand and machine stitching, but we are also experimenting with fabric paints, printing and collage to find different ways to represent our experience of living in and/or visiting the Old Shoreham area.

Learning and sharing

Our focus is on learning together and sharing skills as we go. All are welcome to join us – you don’t need any specific stitching experience.

Exhibition plans

The finished Community Banner will be displayed as part of an installation and exhibition at the Shoreham Marlipins Museum in 2026 alongside other elements of the ‘Capturing Old Shoreham’ project.

Join our meetings

We have regular meetings at the Circular Space in Shoreham to share ideas, inspiration and to collaborate to create the Banner itself. We are flexible in how we work as a group – often collaborating during the session and sometimes taking individual elements away to work on them at home. We have links with other groups and organisations such as schools and a local care home and want to offer opportunities for a range of people across the community to become involved and for different perspectives and ideas to be included.

Project support

The Friends of Old Shoreham (FOldS) ‘Capturing Old Shoreham’ project is supported by a National Trust Changing Chalk Community Grant and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The overall project aims to create a 21st century multimedia portrait of Shoreham’s oldest and largest area, with a number of linked pieces of work including a Soundscape of the area, a new Village Map that builds on the current virtual Heritage trail, a Nature Map of habitats and green spaces and our new stitched Community Banner.
